#Connected Cars: V2X Ecosystem Beginning to Take Shape

By 8th April 2018June 21st, 2019No Comments
Beyond the connected car ecosystem, opportunities will present themselves for integration with other ecosystems, such as the smart home and smart city technology. Juniper believes that the true value of the ecosystem will be felt by others outside the connected car ecosystem, such as law makers and MNOs (Mobile Network Operators). The lack of standardisation in the market is especially interesting in the space for ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems) and autonomous cars.Juniper notes there have been move to establish standards at national levels. Most notably, changes to light vehicles in the US were proposed in December 2016. The new legislation would drive adoption of V2V services through the implementation of a standard. Furthermore, standards from the GSMA for the inclusion of eSIMs in vehicles have largely been adopted by both operators and automotive OEMs (Original Equipment Manufacturers). Juniper notes that many connected car players already have a presence in the smart home market. Whilst Apple and Alphabet, currently have their own smart home platforms, Samsung have acquired Harman for $8 billion to add to their growing portfolio. Juniper believes the market will witness a rise in V2H services, albeit fragmented, over the next 5 years.

Juniper anticipates that 3 regions will be the heaviest users of connected vehicle services (North America, West Europe and Far East & China). In-vehicle entertainment will contribute to the majority of data traffic, mainly music streaming services such as Apple Music and Spotify.

Total Number of Consumer Connected Vehicles in 2022 (m) – 651.7m
